The great sage Swami Rama has been quoted saying :”there are three instructions given by the Himalayan Masters. The first instruction is very clearly stated. Overcome all your fears. Live your life fearlessly.”
Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway!
Talking about living fearlessly is one thing, but actually living with no fear is another. While there are many practices, every single time we confront our fear, we can use skills we have acquired through our yoga practice. Here’s a small example of how I overcame my fear one day here at Blue Osa.
Facing Fear in Costa Rica: A Transformative Ocean Swim at Blue Osa
Living year-round at Blue Osa in Costa Rica, weโre blessed with incredible weather, breathtaking scenery, and sometimes, powerful forces of nature. One unforgettable day, massive 12-foot waves rolled in with the high tide, crashing dramatically onto the beach. I was preparing for my usual half-mile ocean swim when I came face-to-face with these towering wavesโand a wave of fear hit me just as hard.
Instinctively, I turned around, ready to walk away. But years of mindfulness and yoga practice have taught me to pause and observe my fears instead of running from them. I took a breath, turned back toward the ocean, and charged into the water, calling on every ounce of focus, breath control, and inner strength that yoga has given me.
This moment wasnโt just about swimmingโit was about overcoming fear, embracing challenge, and connecting deeply with nature and self.
False Evidence Appearing Real
I firmly believe that 99% of my decisions are based upon my fears, and all fear is false evidence appearing to be real. How often do we make important decisions in our life that revolve around our fears? Fears that have no basis in reality?
Overcoming Fear Starts with Practical Action
The first step in overcoming fear is to stay grounded and practical. Tap into your higher intelligence and speak to yourself with clarity and compassion. Too often, we make choices driven by the fear of loss. But when you commit to the practice of yoga, you begin to see the truth: you have nothing to lose. Yoga helps you recognize your inner strength and break free from fear, leading you toward true liberation.
