What Costa Rica Taught Me About Losing Fear and Living With Love

Losing fear begins not by eliminating it, but by understanding it. Moments of fear are a natural and necessary response to perceived threats. They are built into our biology, designed to keep us safe and help us evolve. But what truly shapes our lives is how we respond to these moments. Do we allow fear to control our decisions and limit our potential? Or do we meet it with awareness, learning to distinguish between real danger and imagined limitations—using it as a catalyst to move forward?

“Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It’s the quality of Awareness we bring to the moment fear arises.”

People often say that everything comes down to either fear or love. When we act from fear, it’s usually because we can’t tell the difference between real and imagined threats. That confusion causes us to freeze when we should take action—or to overreact when there’s nothing real to fight. It’s irrational and usually holds us back.

Fearlessness means choosing to act from love. It doesn’t mean ignoring danger, but rather meeting it with a heightened sense of awareness. This clarity helps quiet irrational fears and allows us to respond with calm and purpose. Acting from that place of love moves us forward.

But what does that awareness look like? What is true fearlessness?

It’s something you can cultivate from anywhere in the world, and it’s something many cultures have a concept of in one way or another. Because in the end, it’s within us all.

I stumbled into it headfirst, however, in Costa Rica. To me, this awareness, fearlessness, is embodied through one simple phrase that you’ll hear all throughout the country: Pura Vida.

Defining Pura Vida is hard to do. Directly translated, it means “pure life”. But that hardly does the phrase justice. Contextually translated, it can also imply “full life”, “real living”, or “going great”. Often the question “Como estas?” will be met with a cheerful “Pura Vida!”

Pura Vida is about a lot of things – enjoying life, being happy, slowing down, showing appreciation, carefree living, relaxation and tranquility, optimism, and perhaps most importantly, giving thanks – for good health, for food, for family, for friends, for clean water, for the beautiful nature that surrounds us.

As a way of life, it’s something you have to be immersed in to really understand. If you come to Costa Rica, its meaning will become readily apparent at every turn. You will grow to feel Pura Vida in your soul every time you hear the phrase (which will be daily).

So what does this have to do with losing fear?

Well, to me, all of these things that Pura Vida stands for – from gratitude to tranquility to joy and optimism to living in the here and now – these are Awareness. They are the qualities that, if cultivated deeply, allow one to bring the right presence of mind to moments of fear. They are what allows some of us to face these moments with fearlessness and to act out of love.

Costa Rica has built an entire culture around these qualities, and they are infectious.

I first noticed a shift in myself when I returned to the States after spending time at Blue Osa. Whatever changes had started within me during that experience seemed to accelerate.

Before that, fear often controlled me. When life threw difficult situations my way—especially ones that threatened to disrupt my stability or undo the progress I had made—I felt overwhelmed. What I once labeled as despair, I now understand was fear. In those moments, I didn’t always have the strength to push forward, take action, or stand up to what I was facing.

Lately, though, I’ve faced similar—if not greater—challenges, and my response has been completely different. Instead of retreating into avoidance—staying in bed, hiding away, or acting from a place of fear—I feel grounded, capable, and ready. I can see the seriousness of each obstacle, but I meet it with clarity, confidence, and a sense of calm. The fear no longer controls me. Instead, I move through it with strength and optimism.

Again, you can develop these qualities within yourself from anywhere in the world. But I can’t help but thank Costa Rica for helping to show me the way.

If you allow yourself to slow down and truly be present here, something shifts. You start to feel the rainforest dew settle on your skin, inhale the sweet, earthy scent of orchids, and hear the layered calls of distant songbirds, toucans, and the nearby roar of howler monkeys echoing through the trees.

And if your heart is open, something even deeper happens. The rhythm of this place—the simplicity, the beauty, the gratitude—seeps into your being. You begin to feel Pura Vida not just as a phrase, but as a presence. And in that presence, your fears gently dissolve—carried away like driftwood on the ocean’s tide.
