While your hands probably can’t match the magic of our in-house massage therapists at Blue Osa Yoga Retreat Center and Spa, with a little DIY spirit you can at least have a bowl of one of their rejuvenating botanical body scrubs for your shower. These delicious recipes bring the rich scents of Costa Rican ingredients and the therapy of the jungle straight to your own home.
Our in-house healers are committed to using native and indigenous healing elements to rejuvenate and restore the body. They’ve developed these recipes using fresh local ingredients that exfoliate, hydrate, and even improve circulation, and they avoid all those toxic ingredients that you find in store-bought beauty products.

While you don’t have to harvest these lush ingredients straight from your backyard like we do at Blue Osa, you do want to make a fresh batch each time you do a body scrub.
So put your work aside, turn off the television, whip up a cocktail for yourself and mix up one of our simple spa recipes for a delicious body scrub. Get ready to wash away your dry skin and give yourself that tropical glow.
Why Natural Body Scrubs Are a Cornerstone of Holistic Wellness
Body scrubs are one of the oldest and most effective self-care rituals on the planet. Across cultures from Ayurvedic traditions to ancient Egyptian beauty rites, exfoliating the skin has long been recognized as far more than a cosmetic act.
When you slough away dead skin cells, you stimulate lymphatic drainage, boost circulation, and prepare your body to absorb the nourishing oils and botanicals that follow.
The result? Skin that’s softer, brighter, and genuinely more alive.

At Blue Osa, we take this ancient practice seriously. Our eco-spa therapists have spent years developing body scrub treatments that work with the natural intelligence of the body, not against it. We skip the synthetic fragrances, the parabens, and the petroleum-derived fillers you’ll find in most commercial scrubs. Instead, we reach into the abundance of the rainforest.
Rainforest Ingredients: What Makes Blue Osa Body Scrubs Different
The Osa Peninsula isn’t just beautiful, it’s one of the most biologically rich places on Earth. National Geographic called it “the most biologically intense place on Earth,” and that intensity shows up in our spa pantry. Our healers source fresh coconut, coffee grounds, lemongrass, tropical fruit, cacao, and native botanicals directly from our organic garden and local farmers.
Locally Sourced. Toxin-Free. Made with Love.
Every body scrub at Blue Osa is made fresh. No sitting on a shelf for months. No mystery preservatives. Just pure, activated ingredients at their most potent, the way nature intended. When you apply a Blue Osa scrub, you’re not just exfoliating. You’re connecting with an ecosystem.
4 Botanical Body Scrub Recipes from Our Costa Rican Eco-Spa
At Blue Osa, our spa therapists are as inspired by the jungle outside as they are by the treatment table inside. These three body scrub recipes were born from years of working with Costa Rica’s most extraordinary natural ingredients, the same ones growing in our garden, harvested from local farmers, and used in our daily spa treatments. Each recipe is simple enough to make at home in under ten minutes, but rich enough in active botanicals to deliver real, visible results. Whether you’re craving an energizing morning ritual, a tropical glow treatment, or a deep detox reset, there’s a scrub here for your skin and your mood. Start with what calls to you, and if you find yourself wishing someone else were doing the work, well, that’s what we’re here for.
Gentle and Sensitive: Coconut Body Scrub Recipe
With coconut oil, the possibilities are endless.
Our Coconut Body Polish is ideal for anyone with sensitive skin, as it offers a light exfoliation that’s less abrasive than other scrubs. The coconut oil makes it extra moisturizing while the sugar cane and carrot gently cleanses and rids you of dead skin cells. The coconut shavings and lemongrass will leave you feeling and smelling like paradise.

Why it works: Grated coconut combined with raw sugar cane effectively buff away dead skin cells, helping to reduce clogged pores, improve texture of the skin, while the coconut oil penetrates deeply, providing intense hydration to dry skin. Carrots are rich in antioxidants, which help brighten the skin, while the overall mixture improves circulation, resulting in a more radiant, youthful complexion, Lemongrass  Lemongrass provides a refreshing, invigorating scent, offering a spa-like, calming experience while helping to tighten pores.
Ingredients:
- Grated coconut (fresh when possible)
- Virgin coconut oil
- Carrots
- Raw sugar cane
- Lemongrass
Instructions: Blend the carrots and lemongrass until smooth. Combine small quantities of each ingredient until you have a scrub that is wet but still solid. Don’t drown it in coconut oil or it will be difficult to handle. Brush your body with the scrub in a circular motion for a few minutes and then rinse. You can repeat this several times.
Energizing and Lifting: Coffee Lover Body Scrub Recipe
This one is our most popular scrub! The caffeine in coffee grounds is great for energizing and lifting your skin. Coffee releases toxins that reduce fat build up as well. I love to do this scrub before a night on the town! It’s also a good morning scrub to wake you up, make yourself a cup of joe and then re-use the grounds in your scrub after they’ve dried a bit.

Why it works: Freshly ground coffee provides a natural, coarse, and effective physical exfoliant that removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores. Raw cane sugar draws moisture into the skin while offering a gentler, dissolving exfoliant to buff away rough patches and promote new cell turnover. Ginger and cinnamon have anti-inflammatory properties that help calm irritation while also increasing oxygenation to the skin, leaving it radiant with a healthy glow. Olive oil is rich in Vitamin E and polyphenols, which help protect the skin barrier to protect the skin long after the treatment is over.
Ingredients:
- Freshly ground coffee beans
- Raw sugar cane
- Mint
- Ginger
- Sweet orange essential oil (if you have it)
- Cinnamon
- Olive oil
Instructions: Blend the ginger and mint until smooth. Combine ground coffee and olive oil until you have a scrub that is wet but still solid enough to handle. Add in small quantities of the other ingredients. Gently brush your body with the scrub in a circular motion for a few minutes and then rinse. You can repeat this several times.
Detoxing and Relaxing: Sea Salt and Herbs Body Scrub Recipe
This scrub will deeply cleanse and detoxify your skin. The ingredients balance, hydrate, and purify, and the chamomile and lavender work to relax your muscles. The scent is divine and really helps to quiet the mind as well.

Why it works: Chamomile calms inflammation and reduces any redness or irritation on the skin as does green tea that also is packed with antioxidants that protects skin from environmental stressors. Lemongrass acts as a natural toner, refreshing and revitalizing skin while stimulating circulation, while mint provides a cooling sensation that relieves itchiness while stimulating blood flow. Lavender promotes balanced, healthy-looking skin and offers a relaxing aroma that reduces stress and mental tension.
Ingredients:
- Sea salt
- Chamomile
- Green tea
- Lemongrass
- Mint
- Lavender (buds or essential oil)
- Oil of your choice
Instructions: Combine the sea salt and oil until you have a mixture that is wet but still easy to handle. Open the tea bags for your chamomile and green tea if it is not already loose leaf, and add the leaves to your mixture. Blend the lemongrass and mint until smooth, and add them in, along with a drop or two of lavender essential oil. If you’re using lavender buds, blend them with the mint and lemongrass.
The Rainforest Detox: Cacao, Sea Salt & Sweet Orange Scrub
This rich, grounding scrub was inspired by the cacao farms of Costa Rica and is one of our therapists’ personal favorites for a reason: it smells incredible, it works deeply, and it leaves your skin with a luminous glow.

Why it works: Raw cacao is packed with antioxidants that fight free radical damage. Sea salt draws out toxins and minerals from the skin. Sweet orange essential oil is a natural mood-lifter and rich in vitamin C.
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp raw cacao powder
- ½ cup coarse sea salt
- ¼ cup melted coconut oil
- 10 drops sweet orange essential oil
- 1 tsp raw honey (optional, for extra moisture)
Instructions: Mix the cacao and sea salt together first, then slowly fold in the melted coconut oil until you get a thick, paste-like consistency. Add the essential oil and honey last. Apply to damp skin using circular motions, focusing on rough areas like elbows, knees, and heels. Leave on for 3–5 minutes before rinsing. Your skin will thank you.
Make a fresh batch each time, these recipes don’t use preservatives, which means they’re pure, but they’re also perishable.
How to Use a Body Scrub for Maximum Skin Benefits
Getting the most out of your body scrub comes down to a few simple principles that our spa therapists teach during treatments:
Start with damp skin. Wet skin allows the scrub to glide without tearing dry skin, plus coarse sugar or salt can create micro-abrasions. Step into a warm shower or bath for 2–3 minutes first, or do right in the shower (out of the stream of water flow once skin is wet).
Use circular, not harsh, motions. Gentle, consistent circles stimulate blood flow and support lymphatic drainage far better than aggressive scrubbing. Think massage, not sandpaper.
Don’t forget the neglected zones. Elbows, knees, heels, and the backs of your upper arms tend to accumulate the most dead skin. Give these areas extra time.
Rinse with warm, then cool water. Warm water removes the scrub; a quick cool rinse closes the pores and seals in the benefits.
Moisturize immediately after. Freshly exfoliated skin absorbs moisture up to 40% better than un-exfoliated skin. Apply a light oil; coconut, jojoba, or argan, while your skin is still slightly damp.
Frequency matters. For most skin types, 1–2 times per week is ideal. Over-exfoliating can strip the skin’s natural barrier.
Take It Beyond DIY: Experience a Professional Body Scrub at Blue Osa
There’s a reason people travel from around the world to lie on our treatment tables. DIY scrubs are wonderful, and we genuinely encourage them, but a professional body scrub treatment is something else entirely.
When our trained therapists apply a body scrub, they’re not just exfoliating. They’re reading your body’s tension patterns, working pressure points, adjusting depth and pressure in real time, and following the body’s natural lymphatic pathways. The 60-minute Blue Osa body scrub treatment is less a beauty service and more a full-body reset.
What’s Included in Our 60-Minute Body Scrub Treatment
Our signature spa body scrub treatments include a full 60 minutes of exfoliating therapeutic massage using our house-made botanical scrubs. You’ll choose your scrub based on your skin’s needs energizing coffee and cane sugar, detoxifying cacao and sea salt, or hydrating coconut and tropical fruit and our therapists handle the rest. The treatment takes place in our open-air eco-spa, surrounded by the sounds of the Costa Rican jungle.
Body scrub treatments are available as standalone bookings or as part of our Luxury Spa Package, which includes a 60-minute treatment of your choice every single day of your stay.
