How Yoga Has Helped me to Become A Better Man

How can I become a better man, a better version of myself?

Like many others on this journey of self-improvement, I turned to yoga.

Yes, yoga is great for physical fitness. It enhances flexibility, mobility, and body awareness. But as Iโ€™ve learned, yoga offers so much moreโ€”especially for men seeking more than just strength or athleticism.

For me, yoga has been a gateway to a deeper understanding of what it means to live fully, intentionally, and with purpose.

Is Yoga the Right Path for Me?

But I wasnโ€™t always sure about this path.

From the outside looking in, yoga always seemed like a space dominated by womenโ€”especially since the 1970s when it became a popular fixture in fitness classes. I wasnโ€™t sure if it had a place in my life. Still, something deep down told me that yoga might be the key to unlocking something I was missing.
I didnโ€™t have all the answers. So, I left in search of something.

Something about Costa Ricaโ€”its vibrant energy, the “Pura Vida” lifestyleโ€”called to me. I hoped it would bring clarity and direction. I wanted to become a better man, and I believed that yoga might help me get there.

It was on the Osa Peninsula, at a remote beachfront yoga retreat, where I began to truly see the impact yoga could have. I found the intangible toolsโ€”mental, emotional, and spiritualโ€”that were missing in my life. And it changed everything.

From Adventure to Awareness

My background has always been in outdoor adventureโ€”rafting, skiing, snowboarding, climbing. All the โ€œmanlyโ€ stuff. Iโ€™ve worked as a guide and instructor, surrounded by adrenaline and action.

And I was lucky. My father was a true role model of strength and heart. He taught me to lead with confidence and empathy, and to always remain a student of life.

But even with that foundation, Iโ€™ve come to realizeโ€”thereโ€™s so much more to becoming a better man. And here in Costa Rica, Iโ€™ve learned two lessons that continue to shape me.

My background is in adventure tourism. I have worked as a raft guide, ski, snowboard, and rock-climbing instructor. The all “manly” kinds of sports. Right?! I thought so.

1. Iโ€™m a Better Man When Iโ€™m Fully Present

Iโ€™ll be honestโ€”being truly present has always been a challenge for me.

Sure, Iโ€™ve learned how to look like Iโ€™m listening. I nod at the right times. Say the right things. But ask me what the conversation was about five minutes later, and I probably couldnโ€™t tell you.

My mind was always racingโ€”thinking of what to say next, planning ahead, drifting somewhere else.

But here, surrounded by jungle and ocean, yoga taught me to slow down. It taught me to be here now. Whether Iโ€™m sitting on the beach or having a conversation with someone I love, I try to show up fully.

Iโ€™ve started to truly value my relationshipsโ€”family, friends, lovers. I want to be someone who holds space for others, who listens with intent, and who cherishes every moment we share. Life is too unpredictable to take anything for granted.

Daily meditation and breathwork have helped me develop that presence. Iโ€™ve let go of the past, stopped worrying so much about the future, and found peace in the now. Thatโ€™s what yoga has taught me. Thatโ€™s what I carry forward every day.

2. Yoga Has Given Me Mental Clarity

Yoga has also brought a surprising gift: clarity.

When Iโ€™m still, when I silence the noise, the answers come.

In this retreat space, Iโ€™ve been able to set goals, make plans, and follow through with intention. Iโ€™ve stopped getting in my own way. All I had to do was quiet my mindโ€”and let the truth rise to the surface.

Thatโ€™s not always easy. Which is why yoga has become part of my morning ritual.

I start by moving my bodyโ€”waking it up, breathing into tight spaces, grounding my energy. A short yoga flow boosts my mobility and gets my heart rate going. Then, I slow it down. I sit by the ocean or pool and meditate. Just 15 to 20 minutes. That space of stillness has become my launching pad for the day.

Even as a beginner, Iโ€™ve noticed the impact. And while I know I wonโ€™t be in Costa Rica forever, Iโ€™m building the tools to take this practice with me wherever I go.

The Journey Continues

Becoming a better man isnโ€™t about adding more muscle or checking off achievements. Itโ€™s about inner strength, presence, and clarity. Costa Ricaโ€™s wild beauty has created the perfect backdrop for this transformation. Itโ€™s given me the space to reflect, reset, and reconnect.

Through yoga, Iโ€™ve learned to appreciate what I haveโ€”right now. Iโ€™ve learned to be present with the people who matter. And Iโ€™ve learned to approach life with a clear mind and an open heart.

These lessons canโ€™t be bought or found in a book. Theyโ€™re earned through daily discipline, intention, and practice.

Yoga has given me a directionโ€”one that feels true, aligned, and powerful.

And I’m just getting started!
