An Early Start for a Jungle Adventure
The 5 am alarm sounds a bit harsh on a Saturday morning—my official day off. I try to ignore it, but my girlfriend Holly (also my fiancé and lifelong adventure buddy) pulls me out of bed. Today, we’re finally doing some exploring after three weeks within the comforting walls of Blue Osa Yoga Retreat. The plan? Embark on the Matapalo Jungle Hike and discover the incredible biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula.
After a hearty breakfast prepared by the kind kitchen staff, we jump into the back of our guide Fillo’s pickup truck and set off. The sun is already bright despite it being the rainy season, casting a vibrant green glow on the jungle. It’s the perfect day for an adventure, and we’re ready to take on the Matapalo Jungle Hike!

Why Choose the Matapalo Jungle Hike?
Just a 20-minute drive from Blue Osa, Matapalo is known for its breathtaking beach—a surfing hotspot. However, our goal today isn’t catching waves but diving into the jungle. The Matapalo Jungle Hike offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse regions, home to 2.5% of the world’s total biodiversity.
Our main mission: to spot the elusive three-toed sloth! I feel like I’m in a real-life nature documentary, complete with Sir David Attenborough’s narration playing in my mind.
Into the Jungle: Let the Hike Begin
After parking the truck by the roadside, we start walking toward the jungle entrance. Even before reaching the trail, we’re treated to an acrobatic performance by spider monkeys swinging between trees like trapeze artists. It’s a spectacular start to the Matapalo Jungle Hike!
Our guide Fillo is more than just knowledgeable—he’s practically a walking jungle encyclopedia. He points out native plants, birds, and insects, sharing fascinating facts about the local ecosystem. But his real talent lies in his bird calls—he can mimic howlers, spider monkeys, and even the elusive blue-crowned motmot.

Wildlife Encounters Along the Matapalo Jungle Hike
One of the first fascinating sights is a massive ant nest. Worker ants carry leaves into their underground colony, creating intricate patterns along the forest floor. Fillo demonstrates how a few stomps on the ground bring out larger soldier ants, ready to protect their home. It’s a tiny but captivating glimpse into the jungle’s daily life.
Next up, Fillo spots a poison dart frog—bright green with striking red patches. He warns us of its deadly toxins, reminding us that the most beautiful creatures can also be the most dangerous.
We continue through the dense forest, spotting the Strangler tree, the Kerosene Tree, and the Milk Tree. Fillo invites us to taste the sap of the Milk Tree, which has a surprisingly sweet, condensed milk flavor.

Cooling Off: Jungle Pools and Wildlife
The jungle air is hot and humid, and we’re sweating profusely as we push deeper into the forest. Thankfully, we reach two natural pools along the trail. Stripping down to our swim gear, we dive into the refreshing water—a perfect break from the intense heat.
As we continue, Fillo warns us to watch our step. The Osa Peninsula is home to venomous snakes, though he reassures us that he’s never had an issue on his tours. Still, it’s a good reminder to respect the jungle environment.
The Search for the Elusive Sloth
Despite our best efforts, we don’t spot any sloths on this trip. Fillo explains that they are often camouflaged high in the trees, blending in seamlessly with the foliage. Disappointed but undeterred, I know I’ll be back to try my luck again.
Final Thoughts: Why You Should Experience the Matapalo Jungle Hike
Though we didn’t find the sloth, the Matapalo Jungle Hike offered so much more than I anticipated. From vibrant wildlife to cooling jungle pools, every moment was filled with awe and excitement.
This hike is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a chance to connect with nature, appreciate the rich biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula, and share unforgettable moments with fellow adventurers. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply curious about Costa Rica’s wild side, the Matapalo Jungle Hike is a must-do.
So, the next time you’re at Blue Osa, don’t just stick to the yoga mat—venture out into the jungle. You never know what you might discover!
