The Reality Behind Costs on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Is Costa Rica Really That Cheap? Many travelers arrive in Costa Rica expecting rock-bottom prices—thinking it’s a cheap developing country where locals survive on a dollar a day and massages go for as little as $10.* While that might be the story some expect, it doesn’t reflect the reality—especially when it comes to the costs on the Osa Peninsula. This remote and ecologically rich region operates on different principles, where sustainability, fair wages, and quality experiences shape what things truly cost. Many people believe Costa Rica is a cheap developing country where locals live on just a dollar a day and massages cost as little as $10.* This perception, however, doesn’t reflect the true costs—especially when you visit regions like the Osa Peninsula.

Why Do Things Cost More on the Osa Peninsula?

Our guests often ask why things can seem expensive or even overpriced. The reality is that the costs Osa Peninsula travelers encounter reflect the region’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and fair wages.

Budget Travel vs. Value-Based Experiences

Yes, you can travel through Costa Rica on a tight budget if you’re backpacking. But if you’re seeking a meaningful vacation that includes delicious farm-to-table cuisine and attentive, high-quality service, expect the price to reflect the value.

You may come across cheaper options. However, many low-cost retreats and boutique hotels keep their prices down by relying on volunteers instead of hiring and paying local employees. This growing trend often explains the noticeably lower costs Osa Peninsula visitors might see at certain establishments.

This trend of using volunteers instead of paid staff may give you more bang for your buck on your vacation, but it comes at a huge cost to the local economy as the volunteers take on roles that would normally provide employment to locals.

Blue Osa’s Ethical Approach to Volunteering

Blue Osa does accommodate volunteers, however, we have a system where volunteers complement and support our paid local staff, rather than being used to displace them.

We are committed to supporting our local community by providing employment opportunities, fair wages, and meaningful incentives. This approach allows us to give back in a way that builds a skilled and passionate team. Beyond offering a living wage, we show our appreciation by sending employees to school, taking them on trips around the world, and providing profit-sharing bonuses three times a year.

Why Remote Living Affects Pricing

To truly understand the costs Osa Peninsula travelers face, consider what it means to live in a remote corner of the world. Transport, for example, is often more expensive than visitors expect.

Some guests have said things like, “I can get an Uber in the U.S. for way less—why is it so expensive here?” But here in the jungle, Uber doesn’t exist. In cities, Uber is cheap because of the abundance of cars and drivers. (And even then, many Uber drivers don’t earn a living wage.)

Town

On the Osa, it’s difficult to obtain vehicles, and everything—from cars to gasoline—must be brought in. These costs drive up the price of transportation services. Unpaved roads also cause rapid wear and tear on vehicles, adding maintenance expenses that providers must recover through higher fares.

So while a taxi to town or to the national park may seem expensive at first glance, the pricing makes sense once you consider the real challenges locals face in providing these services.once you take into account these realities faced by the locals providing the service it is understandable.

Expect Some Surprises—But Also Great Value

People often assume that because Costa Rica is located in Central America, everything should be dirt cheap. That’s not always the case. While some things may cost less than what you’re used to, many items and services will cost the same—or even more.

Come With Curiosity, Leave With Understanding

At Blue Osa, we encourage our guests to come with curiosity. Ask questions. Seek understanding. We’re always happy to share the truth behind the experiences we offer and the prices we charge.

*At Blue Osa, we do not believe in keeping our local population in poverty and work hard to provide a living wage to them.
