Costa Rica Renewal Retreat: Yoga, Meditation and Feldenkrais

Learn new ways of moving and being.
As we age, we get stuck in old patterns and habits of movement and thought, yet there is great potential for renewal through these combined practices. Feldenkrais Method gently and systematically reorganizes the nervous system and body for ease of movement.
Meditation breaks old patterns of thought and emotion creating new neural pathways and building grey matter. Yoga soothes the nervous system and gives space for integration and healing. A week-long immersion in a quiet, beautiful and serene location allows a deeper integration and lasting change.
You will get to explore the combined practices of Feldenkrais, Yoga and Meditation and experience neuroplasticity as you learn new ways of moving and being in the world.
Joanna’s goal is your physical and mental wellbeing.
A yoga teacher since 2001, Joanna’s background is eclectic. She teaches a variety of styles, including beginner level alignment, a Level 2 slow paced Vinyasa, Yin and Restorative as well as somatic movement and meditation. Her teaching is influenced by Iyengar-based teachers, Judith Lasater (Restorative yoga), Kathryn Payne (Pranayama) and Theresa Elliott (alignment, sequencing, and Vinyasa). Her primary influences from her early studies also include choreographed multidimensional vinyasa of Lynn Kingston and the accessible, gentle yoga of Kripalu. Joanna is currently studying with Tias and Surya Little of Prajna Yoga. Prajna fuses traditional yoga practices (Ashtanga and Iyengar) with the energy body wisdom of yoga and Chinese Medicine, Meditation of Buddhism and somatic movement of Feldenkrais and Hanna.
Joanna’s teaching style tends to attract students who are looking to slow things down, who are curious and want to build intelligence in their bodies and wisdom in their minds. In each session, you can expect to find yoga that is accessible, challenging, and interesting. You will leave with increased body intelligence and mindfulness in addition to feeling healthier, refreshed, and integrated physically, energetically, mentally, and spiritually. There is always an element of exploration, play, fun and laughter. Joanna strives to always provide an evolving conversation between herself and her students, especially around their needs and abilities.
Debra is a Licensed Physical Therapist and Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner based in Arizona.
She has lived a “body-centered” life both personally and professionally beginning as a dancer as a child and young adult. She received her BA in dance from University of Arizona in 1977. This led her ultimately to pursue studies in Physical Therapy, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Northern Arizona University in 1985. Continuing to be fascinated by the human body, the nervous system and the brain. In 1998, she discovered and added Feldenkrais Professional Training to her toolbox of therapeutic interventions for healing and self- discovery. Thus, Debra brings the depth of almost five decades of experience working with the body and mind to her work with clients.
Debra also has completed professional certifications in diagnosis and treatment for lumbar spine disorders, Myofascial release, cranio-sacral therapy, osteoporosis prevention and treatment, and visceral manipulation.
She is passionate about helping individuals find a more comfortable, powerful organization of their body and mind, improving function of basic activities, like rolling, coming to sit and stand, walking, reaching, lifting a child or playing golf or tennis.
TENTATIVE DAILY SCHEDULE
Everything is optional. Take the time to rest or go an adventure!
Each day will begin with sunrise meditation and practice of silent reflection. Students are invited to journal or take a morning walk on the beach.
Following a light breakfast, we will gather for our morning practice: either a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement session with Debra or an all levels alignment-based yoga practice with Joanna. After our morning practice, we’ll break until lunch. A walk or further journaling and reflection is welcome.
After lunch, we’ll gather for lectures and discussion about neuroplasticity, meditation and more.
Prior to dinner, we’ll again gather for either a Feldenkrais Session or a Restorative/Gentle Yoga Session.
We’ll close our evenings with meditation.
Both Debra and Joanna are available for one-on-one private sessions during break time.
