Alison West, Ph.D, ERYT, recently named one of the most influential Yoga teachers in America, is director of Yoga Union and the Yoga Union Backcare & Scoliosis Center and its highly regarded training programs. She is also the head of Yoga for NY, the organization that defeated NY State’s attempt to license teacher trainings and NYC’s attempt to impose a class tax on Yoga studios. She will be writing a Yogapeadia column and doing a video Backcare Series with Yoga Journal. Alison also was recently featured on NBC (http://nbcnews.to/2z406xU) in their special: “Overcoming Back Pain: New Doctor Recommendations” in recognition of the excellent Backcare & Scoliosis work Yoga Union does.
A published art historian before turning to Yoga, she established Yoga Union in 1996. It is home to both a strong and evolving Alignment and Flow Program, as well as the largest Backcare, Herniation & Scoliosis Program in the world. Yoga Union offers rigorous 200/500 Hour Teacher Trainings, a 100-Hour Backcare & Scoliosis Certification program, as well as both Ropes & Slings and Chair Yoga Certification programs. Alison teaches internationally and will be leading a ten-day Backcare & Scoliosis Training in Saudi Arabia next year and a Basic backcare Training in Doha, Qatar. Alison is grateful to the wonderful teachers who grace Yoga Union with their exceptional talent and inquisitive minds, and to the students who brighten the studio with their enthusiasm and hard work.
Kaitlyn Hipple is a seasoned and thorough teacher whose joyful yet precise approach to alignment will spark your curiosity and offer you tools for self-inquiry, support, and transformation. Students have described her classes as “challenging yet calming.” Her thoughtful instruction emphasizes aligned integration of the body, helping students find physical, mental, and emotional balance. She is a graduate and core faculty member of Yoga Union’s Teacher Trainings, including the Backcare and Scoliosis Certification Program. Having been mentored by Alison West extensively for eight years, she now mentors many teachers and teachers-in-training, helping them to develop depth and clarity in both their practice and teaching.
Kristen Woods – Through steady & progressive sequencing, clear & precise cueing and anatomical & energetic awareness, Kristen’s classes combine strength and ease while moving with intention and fluidity. Her teaching is most notably influenced by her time studying and practicing with Alison West of Yoga Union in NYC (300hr YTT & 100hr Backcare Certification) and Amy Matthews (Embodied Anatomy & Kinesiology: Bones & Ligaments course). A practitioner since 2005 and a student of many teachers, Kristen enjoys weaving elements of vinyasa and alignment together to show how each style can compliment the other in a enlivening and dynamic way.

“I have been taking weekly classes with Alison [West] for four years. My own moniker for Alison is that she conducts the “Oxford” classes of Yoga. Alison combines the architecture, geometry, physics, anatomy, soft tissue and philosophy of Yoga in every class. She teaches seriously, but with joy. She wants us to, “Have FUN!”…

“Take every class and workshop you possibly can with Alison West, one of the most well studied teachers in today’s yoga community! Her teaching is informative, enlightening, empowering and above all extremely safe. You will be under excellent care, while delighted with discovery and self-inquiry as Alison guides you through a practice, pose or workshop with precision and grace. I have participated in numerous workshops with Alison and I cannot wait for the next one!”

“Every class with Kristen [Woods] feels like a private instruction. Her genuine enthusiasm and excitement for our individual practice is palpable even when we’re in a group – she is always gently and safely suggesting moving a pose into the next iteration and is just as excited and proud as you are when you make it there. I can say without a doubt that my yoga practice has evolved and grown under her mindful instruction. The moments when my practice has deepened, where I have achieved long-wanted goals – they have all happened in her classes. […] Her warm smile, encouraging tone and deep knowledge base creates a healing, challenging and enlightening experience – I recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone.”
“Kaitlyn Hipple has been a godsend in helping me with my back issues. Her intelligence, compassion, and attention to detail has helped me so much in improving my posture and deepening my yoga practice. Kaitlyn’s teachings are always clear with precise demonstrations and helpful adjustments – she gives each student personalized attention in even the most packed classes.
I really can’t stress how much better I feel since I started working with Kaitlyn. I highly recommend her for anyone looking for help with their scoliosis, herniation, or any other back condition!”
