Everyone’s reviews of Blue Osa are right on–Marie’s fresh and healthy cooking was such a treat, the location is perfect, Aaron and Paul were so nice, and they’ll help you figure out what–if any–activities you want to do, and you don’t have to plan ahead. So we did a few of them–kayaking, nature walk, animal sanctuary, and climbed an 80-foot tree. We mixed that in with a couple days of rest, and it was a perfect blend. We really enjoyed the other guests who were there when we were–either we really lucked out, or Blue Osa just attracts good and kind people. We had hot water and electricity, no problem. Just know to bring a good selection of shoes (hiking, walking, teva types, even Crocs). Bring bug spray, for sure (although they have lovely mosquito nets over the beds), and you gotta be able to live without a flatiron or hairdryer (oh, that was soooo hard for me!). Their pool is spectacularly gorgeous and clean, and we definitely recommend getting the most unique massage of your life from Jesus! If leaving your dogs at home makes you sad, they have three sweet dogs on the property, and most often when you start walking to the beach, a couple of them might join you! We would recommend Blue Osa to our friends and family, without hesitation!

Blue Osa blew my mind away. Everything combined to make my stay there an experience like no other. The grounds are immaculate, the open architecture, the rooms are well appointed and decorated in a very simple but elegant way, not to mention the secluded beach.. However, the true magic came from its staff. Aaron is such a gracious & friendly host, not to mention a terrific yoga instructor. The kitchen staff led by Marie kept me and the rest of the group well fed and in good spirits. The same goes for the housekeeping and grounds keeping staff. One of my best experiences was getting to know them. I spent an extra day at Blue Osa with very few guests. Most of the students in my retreat group had left and a new group was arriving later so I had the entire place for myself for a good portion of a day. I was treated like family, everyone constantly checking in on me, making sure I was comfortable and enjoying my day. That same day I had the pleasure of having lunch with Adam (Aaron’s business partner), Marie, Michael (manager) and other staff members at their table. They made me feel like part of their family, happy to see me and to share their table with me. That alone was the icing on an otherwise perfect cake. I spent my birthday at Blue Osa, surrounded by people that until that week I had never met. I have to say, this was one of the best birthdays I have ever had.

I am looking forward to my next visit, which I hope will be sooner rather than later.

When planning my trip to BLUE OSA, Aaron first told me that for however long I stay, by the end, I will wish I had stayed longer. I thought he was alluding to strolling the gorgeous beach just steps away (kayaked the early morning surf), the exotic wildlife and jungle adventures (Tree Climbing and exquisite waterfalls), or getting that last spa treatment to soothe the soul (heavenly!)…when I left, I realized that all these things became a backdrop to what Blue Osa is really about…FAMILY.

Traveling on my own, I was immediately welcomed with smiles and laughter. Michael, the property manager, and his team were nothing short of professional and integral in making my visit absolutely flawless. Marie and her incredibly talented kitchen staff provided me some of the most delicious and freshest meals I could ask for. And Aaron’s spiritual guidance allowed my yoga practice to flourish and THRIVE!! Of course there are two souls that really run Blue Osa, Rama and Shiva…they run around the property like it’s their kingdom and embody the true spirit of family and unity.

Muchas Gracias from the bottom of my heart to the caring, hard working and friendly staff of Blue Osa. You made my time here a true oasis of bliss and I look forward to my return and re-connecting with you all again. Much love and light from the Great White Way. Besos!

My first time in the country Costa Rica of Blue Osa was spent at The Blue Osa. Very much looking forward to my next time at The Blue Osa, already planned for next year. The Blue Osa, low key and informal but still with class and style. I have traveled all around the world and there is nothing negative I have shared with anyone about the Blue Osa. Right on the ocean, with a beach great for swimming and strolling. Not always the case I have discovered at some luxurious resorts. The weather was perfect and the grounds are beautiful. For you pool lovers, the pool and surrounding area is even more gorgeous then the pictures. Food is served buffet style, but dietary issues are gladly accommodated. Every meal was delicious served in a beautiful open air dining area. Many activities in the area that Blue Osa can arrange, but never leaving the grounds of the hotel is a great way to spend a few days. Could go on and on. Highly recommended.

I was invited to Blue Osa by a friend without really knowing what to expect. I spent the two weeks prior to my visit all over Costa Rica, and Blue Osa was the perfect ending to a great getaway! In fact, it was the best part of my trip to Costa Rica. The staff is warm and welcoming, treating you like an old friend well missed. The food is amazing! I still can’t get over the food. It’s all fresh and mostly vegetarian. The facility itself is well laid out, situated on a private stretch of beach with clean guest rooms. At night, you can hear the sound of waves crashing nearby. If the ocean isn’t your thing, there’s a wonderful (and warm) lap pool to swim in or lounge by. This is a great place to go to with a group of people or by yourself. I found myself comfortably walking the private beach alone at sunrise and also hanging out at night with the yoga retreat that was there. I cannot wait to return to Blue Osa during my next trip to Costa Rica. I only stayed at Blue Osa for 3 days and that was not nearly long enough!

Thank you to Aaron, Michael, Paul, and the rest of the wonderful staff at Blue Osa for making my stay one to remember (and want to relive)!

Room Tip: The Penthouse room is great, with a panoramic view of the ocean!

This video is the third in this series titled, “In the Kitchen with Marie.” Marie is the Blue Osa Chef. She runs the kitchen, nurtures and provides for the guests at Blue Osa.

In this video, Marie teaches us how to make a Tagine, that is one of our speciality dishes at Blue Osa.

A tagine is a unique type of ceramic or clay cookware that’s popular in North Africa. The bottom is a wide, circular shallow dish used for both cooking and serving, while the top of the tagine is distinctively shaped into a rounded dome or cone.

The word “tagine” also refers to the succulent dish which is slow-cooked inside the cooking vessel. Typically, a tagine is a rich stew of meat, chicken, or fish, and most often includes vegetables or fruit. Vegetables can also be cooked alone.

Marie has become a vital member of our family here at Blue Osa, staying on throughout it’s development and construction and serving as administrator, manager and adoptive mother to one and all. Marie now is the Blue Osa chef and is offering two cooking retreats for 2012.

How I arrived at Blue Osa was purely by many magical moments strung together in a complete example of synchronicity. I knew that whatever it was that led me to Blue Osa, it was exactly where I was supposed to be.
Blue Osa is in the middle of the rainforest; it’s natural and raw beauty takes your breath away. The grounds are cared for meticulously by Fillos who is so completely passionate about it all and is genuinely excited to share all of his knowledge with you regarding the surroundings and the fauna. You can see it from the sparkle in his eye whenever he is sharing any bit of information with you.
We were initially greeted by Paul who, despite the late hour, was smiling and welcoming. I immediately felt his warmth and his inspiring energy. He led us to our rooms which were simply charming, always clean, comfortable and calming. I love that Blue Osa is eco-friendly and runs on solar energy and was excited to be sharing their consciousness.
I also appreciated his heads up about the howler monkey’s morning greeting which was welcomed and expected seeing as we were in the middle of this amazing jungle.
Paul is a charming bright light, who is always happy to assist in any way he can and genuinely cares about your experience. Every encounter with Paul leaves you feeling light, happy and fun. He also makes a mean Coconut Mojito…just sayin’!

The food will knock your socks off! The textures, the colors, the flavours, the aromas, the freshness …it all gets you but mostly the feeling that it was prepared with love and by someone who’s passion for food preparation is evident each time she shares with you what your next meal consists of. Marie is a beautiful and lovely French woman that I was so happy to communicate with in our native French language. It is clear that this woman wants you to enjoy your meal and is proud of her staff and is developing them as well which is super Cool!

The main purpose of the experience in Costa Rica was Yoga and I could not think of anything more magical than Blue Osa’s yoga deck. The open setting just above the ground, facing the ocean surrounded by beautiful sights and sounds could not be more perfect. No IPOD or soundtrack required! It was easy to take it all in and pose and reflect in this indescribable space. My chosen excursions of Surfing lessons, Zip-lining and hiking through the rainforest were all arranged by Blue Osa (Aaron and Michael) and were all completely fabulous and exhilarating to say the least. They (Aaron and Michael) were very accommodating and organized our transportation and the days that worked for us a group. It was great that the option to do exactly as little or as much as you wanted to do was completely supported. There is plenty to occupy yourself with if you chose to stay on the property; the pool is awesome, the beach is naturally beautiful, the grounds have plenty of serene spaces to chill, read, meditate and nap or all of the above AND there are also the Spa services.

A massage from Jesus and a facial from Marcella, it just doesn’t get any better! I have had spa treatments in the past but never quite like these. Jesus is a skilled therapist who tailored a massage to fit my needs exactly and let me just say his name suits him…he’s a miracle worker! Marcella is equally skilled and having a foot rub with ground coffee beans should be a must to the beginnings of any facial. My skin was not happy when I arrived at Blue Osa but the treatment and the all-natural Costa Rican products used during the facial were healing and decadent.

Aaron, our gracious host, was simply fabulous! His presence, his kindness, his graciousness and his beautiful spirit was limitless. Clearly his goal was to make sure that each and every guest’s experience at Blue Osa was one that would stay with them forever. I use the word ‘guest’ but I feel that I was more than a ‘guest’ and that I have made a friend in Aaron. I mentioned that my skin was not at all happy when I arrived at Blue Osa and Aaron was kind enough to suggest some products that helped and also offered me one of his specialty facials. Aaron is very knowledgeable and has a passion for skin care and during my facial with him I felt genuinely taken care of. I would describe the ‘event’ as a ritual of love and care and I am forever grateful to Aaron for providing me with that experience.

There is so much to share and so much to say but I hope that if you are looking for a magical experience that this writing will point you in the direction of your heart….straight to Blue Osa!!! Until we meet again…
Namaste
Brigitte Brousseau

Blue Osa Yoga Retreat and Spa, Costa Rica is a little piece of paradise and my trip this year will live in my heart forever. I fell in love with the place the moment we arrived and were greated with warmth and smiles as if we were old friends being welcomed back home. Aaron, our wonderful host is so welcoming and you can tell he takes great pride in ensuring that every moment of your stay is a happy one. He takes care to ask each indviduals personal needs or wants whether it is from spa treatments to excursions and makes sure that everyone is taken care of. The manager Michael is equally accomodating, and always greeting you with a smile and asking how your day is. And then there is Paul, the bartender, but not just a bartender, he’s like an old friend the minute you meet him. He has this amazing shiny personality and smile that welcome you and make you laugh. The staff are like a family at Blue Osa who mindfully take great care of you, making you feel like you are part of the family too…it’s not often you find this type of service on vacation!
The grounds are beautiful and beautifully kept with care. The beach is spectacular and the view from the yoga deck is incredible. Practicing twice a day to the soundtrack of the jungle and ocean waves is enchanting and inspiring.
I also love the fact that this was an eco lodge that is solar powered…it helped me connect to a deep appreciation of our surroundings and I have brought home that same awareness, being more mindful of waste and conserving water and energy wherever I can.
The spa is also amazing. I think I had the best massage EVER from Jesus and I while I did not get a treatment from Marcella, a number of ladies in the group I was with did, and they were raving about her facials! I did have a facial with Aaron which was beyond words. He took great care and it was like a beautiful ritual that left me feeling so relaxed and amazed that my skin could look and feel so great. I would highly recommend at least one treatment at the spa…it is a huge treat!
And then there is the food. There is so much to say about the food. It is simply beautiful. Mindfully prepared by the lovely Marie, she takes care to prepare the meals with love and positive intention. She was so sweet to ask every individual their dietary needs and always ensured there was a vegetarian (or many) option available. Every dish was delicious and I love the fact that most of the fruits and veggies are grown right on the property. Marie’s cooking actually inspired me to write about it on our yoga studio website. Eating beautiful food in a beautiful place with amazing people was so nourishing…it was simply perfect!
I couldn’t have asked for more from my trip to Blue Osa. I feel extremely grateful for the incredible experience and I can’t wait to go back! Thank you to everyone at Blue Osa for an amazing week, you are awesome!

I recently stayed at Blue Osa to participate in a yoga retreat over Christmas, lead by Aaron, one of the owners. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Blue Osa. The owners and all the staff are incredibly warm and welcoming – which was particularly important to me as I was traveling solo. The property is gorgeous and well-appointed – from the rooms, to the open air dining room, to the yoga studio, to the pool and pavilion, the beach, and the spa, too. The food is amazing – all prepared fresh daily from local ingredients and yet with incredible variety of taste and cuisine. Aaron is a fantastic yoga instructor, he gives great feedback and adjustments focused on alignment, particularly drawing upon the Iyengar style. I learned some very important adjustments to key postures while I was there that will really enhance my yoga practice. Jesus, the massage therapist at Blue Osa, was absolutely divine (pun intended). While you could happily spend all your time at Blue Osa, there are many fun and exciting excursions you can take on and around the peninsula and setting them up through Blue Osa was super easy – even all the billing was handled through them. I fully intend to go back and stay there again!

I love traveling. That said, I’m picky when it comes to where I stay. Blue Osa is a gem. It is a secluded, quiet, friendly place that makes it easy to forget about the tedious tasks of daily life.

Our days started with the sounds of Scarlet Macaws and Howler Monkeys, which is a wonderful alternative to the drilling sound of my alarm clock. As we walked out of our bungalow, we were surrounded by the natural beauty of primitive flowering bush and meticulously manicured grounds. The sanctuary (a much better word to describe Blue Osa than “resort”) is not an overwhelmingly large property. A short walk will lead you to a beautiful beach surrounded by rainforest. My husband and I walked on the beach several times a day, admiring the palm trees and wild brush. We were lucky to catch White Faced Monkeys playing in the trees. It’s one thing to see these creatures in a zoo, and much more exciting to see them while you’re just taking a stroll.

Meals are provided by the friendly staff of Blue Osa. The food was scrumptious! We were served local cuisine, prepared with local produce. It was relaxing to not have to think about what we would have for our next meal, or when we should eat. You can absolutely trust that you will be well fed and you’ll enjoy the meal.

There is an extensive spa service menu. My husband and I both enjoyed a package that included a foot scrub and massage, body scrub, body massage, and facial. Talk about relaxation! The products they use during spa services are also locally made. I enjoyed them so much that I purchased some to take with me. Aaron, the owner of Blue Osa, made personal recommendations for me. In addition to being a wonderful and “present” host, he is trained in skin care and I could not be happier with his recommendations!

Speaking of Aaron, I cannot express how impressed I am with him. This is someone who is obviously involved in ensuring the satisfaction of each guest’s stay. He is easy to talk to and clearly enjoys his guest’s company! I did not feel like a hotel guest. I was treated like a family member.

When you visit, I encourage you to bike and hike to Matapalo Rainforest. It’s a lovely trek and an adventurous hike. We saw (and heard) a lot of wildlife! Again, we were lucky enough to spot different species of monkeys! This time, we saw Spider Monkeys and Squirrel Monkeys. The Squirrel Monkeys are adorable!

There were guests who enjoyed other tours. One couple we spent much time talking with were lucky enough to spot a jaguar and her cub on the way to the zipline tour. How cool is that?

The only regret I have with this vacation is that I was not able to stay longer. Let’s face it, life can get hectic. My short stay of four days was the most relaxing four days I can remember in years, and I would LOVE to go back and stay longer – perhaps even for a yoga retreat.

If you are on the edge about whether or not Blue Osa is for you, it’s my hope that this review convinces you that it is. This isn’t a facility near a BIG town with lots of shopping. This is a place that will bring you a humble appreciation of nature and the simple, yet beautiful, gifts this world has to offer.

Enjoy.

Marie
Born in Africa, and raised in the south of France, Marie was the previous owner of what is now Blue Osa. In February of 2007, Marie met Adam and Aaron and immediately recognized in them a vision and a love for the land that was akin to her own. Since then, Marie has become a vital member of our family here at Blue Osa, staying on throughout it’s development and construction and serving as administrator, manager and adoptive mother to one and all. Marie delights in both travel and hospitality, having opened restaurants in San Francisco and Cartagena, Columbia in the 80′s and 90′s.
